The First World is a term, used along with Second world and Third world, to describe a country's economic and social status.

The term "first world" was initially used during the Cold War to describe those western countries that were in the United States' sphere of influence (in other words, the members of NATO). Over time, the meaning of the term has extended to include all western countries, and eventually all developed countries.
