Home > Fiat lux

Fiat lux is a Latin phrase meaning " let there be light" when relating to Genesis (1:3). The full phrase is "Dixitque Deus fiat lux et facta est lux" ("God said let there be light, and there was light"). Alternatively "more light" when referring to the last thing Goethe said before he died.

It is the motto of the University of California and appears on the university seal. It is also the motto of the University of Lethbridge in southern Alberta, Canada, and has been referred to in multiple movies, books, and games--often for its metaphorical meaning of dispelling ignorance.
