Fayette County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette (or de la Fayette), who aided General George Washington in the American Revolutionary War. As of 2000 the population was 18,495. Its county seat is Fayette.

Fayette County was established on December 20, 1824.

2 Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,630 km˛ (629 mi˛). 1,626 km˛ (628 mi˛) of it is land and 4 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,539, and the median income for a family is $35,291. Males have a median income of $29,239 versus $20,606 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,439. 17.30% of the population and 13.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.10% of those under the age of 18 and 21.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
