Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is the international governing body of the sport of association football (sometimes called simply football, or soccer). It is based in Zurich, Switzerland.

FIFA was formed in Paris on March 21, 1904 and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2004. It announced in April 2004 that it is expecting to earn $144 million profit on $1.64 billion in revenue between 2003 and 2006

The organisation works in conjunction with regional arms that oversee football development in the different parts of the world. The six confederations that comprise FIFA (and the regions that they govern) are:

  7. Confederations CupThe FIFA Confederations Cup is an association football tournament for national teams, held every two years by FIFA. It is contested by the winners of each of the six continental championships, with one or more other teams invited to make up the numbers.

FIFA also promotes the sport, regulates the transfer of players between teams, awards the FIFA World Player of the YearThe FIFA World Player of the Year is a football award given annually to the male and female player who is thought to be the best in the world, based on votes by coaches of international teams. In a voting system based on a type of a Borda count, each coac, and publishes the FIFA World RankingsThe FIFA World Rankings were introduced in August 1993 to make it possible to publish comparisons of the relative strengths of internationally active teams at regular intervals. The rankings obtained are, unsurprisingly, the subject of considerable debate every month.
