In 2002, Vaduz suffered one of the cruelest defeats in football history in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup. In the home leg of its tie with Scottish club Livingston, Vaduz drew 1-1. The away leg ended in a scoreless draw; at the moment the final whistle blew, a Vaduz player's shot was heading toward the Livingston net, and went past the keeper for what would have been the tie-winning goal. The Vaduz goal was disallowed, sending Livingston through on away goals.
In 2004, Vaduz achieved its greatest-ever success in European competition when the side defeated Ireland's Longford Town FC in both legs of the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup.
