Erich von Däniken (born April 14, 1935 in Zofingen , Switzerland) is a controversial Swiss author who is best known for his theories about extraterrestrial influence on human culture since prehistoric times, known as paleocontact and ancient astronaut theory.Currently von Däniken is a prominent member of the Archaeology, Astronautics and SETI Research Association (AAS RA), of which he is a co-founder. Von Däniken has developed a theme park called Mystery Park, based in Interlaken, Switzerland. It opened May 23, 2003. A new science fiction television series based upon his books is under production.
1 Claims of alien influence on Earth
Building on the earlier work of many others, Däniken has proposed that if intelligent extraterrestrial life exists and has entered the local Solar System in the past, there is the possibility of finding traces of their visits on Earth, on the neighboring planets, or elsewhere in space.
He has also suggested that human evolution may have been manipulated by means of genetic engineering by extraterrestrial beings. He has published 26 books and claims to have sold over 60 million copies.
The evidence von Däniken has put forward to support his theories can be categorised as follows:
- Artifacts have been found which represent higher technological knowledge than is presumed to have existed at times when they were manufactured. Von Däniken maintains that these artifacts have been manufactured either by extraterrestrial visitors or by humans who learned the necessary knowledge from them. Such artifacts include StonehengeStonehenge is a Neolithic and Bronze Age monument located near Amesbury in Wiltshire, England, about 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Salisbury. It is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones, known as megaliths. There is, the head statues of Easter IslandEaster Island ( Polynesian: Rapa Nui ("Great Rapa"), Spanish: Isla de Pascua is an island in the south Pacific Ocean belonging to Chile. Administratively it is a province of the Chilean region of Valparaiso, although it is located 3,515 km (2,185 miles) w and the Antikythera mechanismThe Antikythera mechanism is an ancient artifact believed to be an early clockwork mechanism. It was discovered in a shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, between Kythera and Crete, and has been dated to about 87 BC. The wreck was discovered in 1.
- In ancient art throughout the world themes can be observed which can be interpreted to illustrate astronauts, air and space vehicles, non-human but intelligent creatures, and artifacts of high technology. Von Däniken also points out details that are similar in art of unrelated cultures.
- Origins of religions as reaction to a contact of primitive humans with an alien race. The humans considered the technology of the aliens to be supernaturalThe supernatural refers to conscious magical, religious or unknown forces that cannot ordinarily be perceived except through their effects. This word is often used interchangeably with preternatural or paranormal. Unlike natural forces, these putative sup and the aliens themselves to be godThis article focuses on the concept of singular, monotheistic God . See deity, gods, or goddesses for details on divine entities in specific religions and mythologies. God is a term referring to the supreme being generally believed to be ruler or creators. According to von Däniken, the oral and literal traditions of most religions contain references to visitors from 'stars' and vehicles travelling through air and space. These, he says, should be interpreted as literal descriptions which have changed during the passage of time and become more obscure, rather than symbolic or mythical fiction. One such is EzekielThis article is about the prophet Ezekiel; for the character in Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible see Ezekiel Cheever. Ezekiel or Yechezkel " God will strengthen", Standard Hebrew Yezqel Tiberian Hebrew Yezqel was a prophet in the Hebrew Bible, commonly's revelation in Old TestamentThe Old Testament or the Hebrew Scriptures constitutes the first major part of the Christian Bible, usually divided into the categories law, history, poetry (or wisdom books) and prophecy.
