Home > Enigma (game)

Enigma is the name of two different free computer puzzle games. One is a text-based game for *NIX systems involving blocks falling in three directions, bombs, and pushing stuff around. The other one, described on this page, is based on Oxyd, and is released under the GPL.

Gameplay consists of maneuvering a marble (or sometimes multiple marbles) around a "landscape" to match pairs of "Oxyd stones." The game has numerous objects and landscape features whose purpose is not explained — as part of solving a landscape, the player must figure out what they do.

Landscapes usually take the form of logic puzzles, although frequently, dexterity with the pointing device (the only form of input) is also required. The landscapes are generated by scripts in the Lua language, making the creation of complicated landscapes relatively easy. A level editor exists, but it is currently not used very much.

Enigma is compiled for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, and Linux (with packages available for several distributions).
