Home > Seaside resort

The seafront of Torquay, a seaside resort in Devon, England.

A seaside resort is a resort located on the coast. Where a beach is the primary focus for tourists, it may be called a beach resort.

The first seaside resorts developed with the improvements in transportation of the industrial revolution. This enabled more people to take regular holidays away from their usual place of residence. Brighton on the south coast of England was popularised by George IV of the United Kingdom while he was regent and became an alternative to the spa towns for the wealthy.

As the nineteenth century progressed, more seaside resorts grew up to cater to working class people, often travelling on organised trips.
