The Eight Immortals (八仙 in pinyin: ba1 xian1; in Wade-Giles: pa hsien) are Chinese deities who are represented as a group and rarely individually. Each Immortal's power can be transferred to a tool of power (法器) that can give life or destroy evil. Together, these eight tools are called "Covert Eight Immortals" (暗八仙 an4 ~). Most of them are said have born in Tang Dynasty or Song Dynasty. Not only are they worshipped by the Daoists, but they are a popular element in the secular Chinese culture. They live on Penglai Mountain-Island.The Immortals are:
- Immortal Woman He (He Xiangu),
- Royal Uncle Cao (Cao Guojiu),
- Iron-crutch Li (Li Tieguai),
- Lan Caihe,
- Lü Dongbin,
- Philosopher Han XiangOne of the Eight Immortals, Philosopher Han Xiang ( in pinyin: han2 xiang1 zi0) or Han Xiang Zi in Wade-Giles as Han Hsiang Tzu was born Han Xiang in Tang, and his courtesy name is Qingfu ( qing1 fu1). He is the nephew or grandson of Han Yu, a prominent s (Han Xiang Zi),
- Elder Zhang GuoElder Zhang Guo or Zhang Guo Lao Chang Kuo Lao in Wade-Giles, ( in pinyin: zhang1 guo3 lao3) is one of the Eight Immortals. He is known as Master Comprehension-of-Profundity ( tong1 zhao4 xian1 shen1). He lived as an occultist- alchemist on Mount Tiao in (Zhang Guo Lao), and
- Zhongli QuanZhongli Quan ( or in pinyin: Zhongli Quan), or Chung-li Ch'uan in Wade-Giles, is one of the most ancient of the Eight Immortals (the oldest is Iron-crutch Li) and the leader of the groups. Some people consider Lu Dongbin to be an informal leader. From Yan.

- The most significant of the writings is The Eight Immortals Depart and Travel to the East (《八仙出處東游記》 ba1 xian1 chu1 chu4 dong1 you2 zi4) by Wu Yuantai (吳元泰 wu2 yuan2 tai4) in Ming DynastyThe Ming Dynasty ( Chinese: ; Pinyin: ming chao was the ruling dynasty of China from 1368 to 1644, though claims to the Ming throne (now collectively called the Southern Ming survived until 1662. The dynasty followed the Yuan Dynasty and preceded the Qing.
- There is another work in Ming, by an anonymous writer, called The Eight Immortals Cross the Sea (《八仙過海》 ba1 xian1 guo4 hai3). It is about the Immortals on their way to attend the Conference of the Magical Peach (蟠桃會 pan2 tao2 hui4) and encountered an ocean. Instead of going across by their clouds, Lü Dongbin suggested that together, they should use their powers to get across. Stemming from this, the Chinese proverb "The Eight Immortals cross the sea, each reveals its divine power" (八仙過海,各顯神通 ~, ge4 xian3 shen2 tong1) indicates the situation that everybody shows off their powers to achieve a common goal.
