Egbert Anson Van Alstyne (born, according to differing sources, March 4 or March 6 1878; died July 9, 1951) was a United States songwriter and pianist. Van Alstyne was the composer of a number of popular and ragtime tunes from the early 20th century.

He was born in Marengo, Illinois. After some time touring in Vaudeville he moved to New York City, initially working as a Tin Pan Alley song-plugger until he was able to make his living as a songwriter. He teamed with lyricist Harry H. Williams . Van Alstyne shares credit with Tony JacksonAnthony (or Antonio Jackson best known as Tony Jackson ( June 5, 1876 April 20, 1920) was a United States pianist, singer, and composer. Jackson was born to a poor African American family in uptown New Orleans on June 5, 1876. He showed musical talents at on the hit Pretty BabyPretty Baby is a song by Tony Jackson. It was first published as sheet music in 1916, but Jackson is remembered as playing and singing the tune at least some 5 years earlier. It was a Tin Pan Alley hit. Pretty Baby is a 1978 historical fiction dramatic mo. It was common for Tin Pan Alley publishers to add the name of one of their famous hit makers to tunes, and many have speculated this as being the main reason for Van Alstyne's name appearing on the piece, but Van Alstyne may have had a hand in writing or modifying the verse to Jackson's famous chorus.
