Early County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 12,354. The county's county seat is Blakely, Georgia 6.

1 Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,337 km˛ (516 mi˛). 1,324 km˛ (511 mi˛) of it is land and 13 km˛ (5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.98% water.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 12,354 people, 4,695 households, and 3,295 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km˛ (24/mi˛). There are 5,338 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (10/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 50.28% White, 48.14% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,695 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.00% are married couples living together, 20.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.70% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 87.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,629, and the median income for a family is $31,215. Males have a median income of $26,458 versus $17,277 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,936. 25.70% of the population and 22.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.20% of those under the age of 18 and 20.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
