Home > Dwarf galaxy

A dwarf galaxy is a small galaxy composed of about 10 million stars, a small number compared to our own Milky Way's 200-400 million stars. These small galaxies frequently orbit around larger galaxies, such as the Milky Way, Andromeda, and Triangulum galaxies.

Our own Milky Way has 11 know dwarf galaxies orbiting it. The largest of these dwarf galaxies is the Large Magellanic Cloud with a diameter of 20,000 light years. The smallest, Carina Dwarf and Leo II are only 500 light years in diameter. The other dwarfs orbiting our galaxy are Sagittarius Dwarf , Small Magellanic Cloud, Ursa Minor Dwarf , Sculptor Dwarf , Draco Dwarf , Sextans Dwarf , Fornax dwarf , and Leo I.

Dwarf galaxies come in many different morphologies
