Home > Dorchester, New Brunswick

Dorchester is a village in Westmorland County, in South-Eastern New Brunswick, Canada. Its approximate population (c. 2004) is 1100. Dorchester is primarily English-speaking but it is adjacent to French-speaking Acadian areas.

Dorchester was the Shire town, or administrative centre, of Westmorland County, and as such has several fine historic homes and civic buildings; however, counties are no longer an administrative jurisdiction in Canada. Its major employer is a major prison, the Dorchester Maximum Security Penitentiary. Many residents work in the nearby town of Sackville or the city of Moncton.

One of Dorchester's historic buildings operates as the Keillor House museum.

Dorchester no longer has passenger rail service. The nearest airport is about 40 km away in Dieppe.
