Dirk Arthur Kempthorne (born October 29, 1951) is an American Republican politician from Idaho, who currently is the governor of that state.

Kempthorne's first major political victory was in 1986 when he became the mayor of the city of Boise. He served in that position until 1993, when he became a member of the United States Senate for Idaho. He had been elected in 1992 to replace another Republican, Steven Symms , who was retiring. Kempthorne served one term, not running for reelection in 1998, deciding instead to run for Governor of Idaho, winning the Republican nomination as a supporter of the retiring Republican governor, Phil Batt.

Kempthorne, who was notable for conducting his campaign while still being active in WashingtonWashington, DC officially the District of Columbia (also known as DC Washington and, historically, the Federal City is the capital city and administrative district of the United States of America. Residents of the city and its surrounding suburbs refer to as a senator, won the election in a landslide, receiving 68% of the vote while his Democraticlogo depicts a stylized donkey in red, white, and blue. The Democratic Party is one of the two major United States political parties. The Party is currently the minority in both the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives, as w opponent, Robert Huntley , received 29%. He was reelected in 20022002 is a common year starting on Tuesday (see link for calendar). 2002 was the first palindromic year since 1991 and the last until 2112. 2002 was also designated: International Year of Ecotourism and Mountains National Science Year in the United Kingdom with 56% of the vote, compared to his Democratic opponent, Jerry Brady , who polled 42%. Kempthorne is notable for his conservative views, particularly on economic issues.
