Dickenson County is a county located in the U.S. State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 16,395. Its county seat is Clintwood 6.
Dickenson County, formed in 1880 from parts of Buchanan County, Russell County, and Wise County, is Virginia's youngest county. It was named for William J. Dickenson, delegate to the Virginia General Assembly from Russell County, 1859-1861, 1865-1867, and 1877-1882.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 864 km˛ (334 mi˛). 859 km˛ (332 mi˛) of it is land and 5 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.
The county is divided into five supervisor districts: Clintwood, Ervinton, Kenady, Sand Lick, and Willis.

The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.88.
In the county, the population is spread out with 22.10% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 26.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $23,431, and the median income for a family is $27,986. Males have a median income of $27,281 versus $17,695 for females.
