In 2004, the DVU entered a non-competition agreement with right-wing party NPD for the state elections in Brandenburg and Saxony. Both parties were successfull in their chosen state, the DVU reaching 6.1% in Brandenburg and the NPD claiming 9.2% in Saxony. After their success, the parties stated they would run on a single platform in the 2006 federal election.
