For 10 years, King was an activist with the Progressive Labor Party. He also made a living selling term papers to college students, advertising himself as "Caspar the friendly ghost-writer." He is now active on the internet and the speakers' circuit as a researcher who specializes in tracking and analyzing right-wing movements. King's book on research techniques is recognized as a standard work in the field.
Like his colleague Chip Berlet, King has a history of writing articles claiming Lyndon LaRouche has an hidden right-wing agenda that involves fascism and anti-Semitism. King and others have claimed that LaRouche uses an elaborate code in all his public utterances, and that LaRouche often means exactly the opposite of what he appears to be saying.
LaRouche supporters note that the conservative Smith-Richardson Foundation is credited in the acknowledgements to Lyndon LaRouche and the New American Fascism.
