Deep Ellum got its name during the 1920s and 1930s as being THE jazz and blues hotspot of the south. “Ellum” was derived from “Elm St.”, one of the 3 main streets (Main and Commerce) that ran east and west through Deep Ellum, connecting it to down town to its west. Artist like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Huddie " Leadbelly" Ledbetter, and Bessie Smith played in places like The Harlem and The Palace.

During the 1960s and the 1970s, Deep Ellum was largely a warehouse and industrial district, an as such, started to attract an artist community to the cheap loft space that was available.
