He was born on January 1, 1968 in Osijek, Croatia. He began his playing career at his local team Osijek in 1984, whence he moved to Dinamo Zagreb in 1989.
After impressing in the Yugoslav First League, he made his debut for Croatia in 1990 against Romania.
