Crook County is a county located in the State of Wyoming. As of 2000, the population is 5,887. Its county seat is Sundance 6.

1 History

Crook County was organized in 1875.

2 Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 7,435 km˛ (2,871 mi˛). 7,404 km˛ (2,859 mi˛) of it is land and 31 km˛ (12 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.42% water.

3 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 5,887 people, 2,308 households, and 1,645 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). There are 2,935 housing units at an average density of 0/km˛ (1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.86% White, 0.05% Black or African American, 1.02% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,308 households out of which 32.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.30% are married couples living together, 5.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.90% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 24.60% from 25 to 44, 27.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 102.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,601, and the median income for a family is $43,105. Males have a median income of $34,483 versus $18,967 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,379. 9.10% of the population and 7.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.90% of those under the age of 18 and 11.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
