Cosmetology refers to care of skin, hair and nails. This includes manicures, pedicures, application of artificial nails, special occasion styling, shampooing hair, cosmetics, massage therapy ,waxing, chemical relaxers or straighteners, and coloring and highlighting. To be a cosmetologist in the United States requires a licence, which must be renewed every two years. The State Board of Cosmetology regulates how many continuing education units or hours are needed to maintain an active license in a particular state. There is a minimum requirement of hours of cosmetology school to become licensed. There is a difference between a barber and a cosmetologist, as barbers only cut hair. Barbers are also allowed to use a straight razor to shave their clients, whereas a cosmetologist can only use the razor if it used for cutting hair, not touching skin. This may differ from state to state. If someone was interested in going to school for this, they could take a general cosmetology course, and graduate being licensed to all of the things listed above, or they can chose just to take the manicurist portion, and only be licensed for manicures, pedicures and artificial nails. You could go just for an esthetician's license, which would only enable you to do skin care and waxing.Standing long hours behind a chair is not uncommon in this field. It's best to care for your feet and wear support hose if you can. It is also common for some stylists who have been doing hair for many years to develop carpal tunnel syndrome, varicose veins in their legs, and also suffer chronic back pain.
