Corylaceae, or the hazel family, includes a small number of trees and shrubs in four genera, including the hazels, the hornbeams and the hop-hornbeams. Many botanists include the Corylaceae within the closely related Betulaceae, but it is treated as distinct in the major Kew checklist of the Fagales.
Example species of the four genera are:
- Carpinus - hornbeams
- Corylus - hazels
- Common Hazel, Corylus avellana
- Filbert , Corylus maxima
- Turkish Hazel , Corylus colurna
- Ostrya - hop-hornbeams
- European Hop-hornbeam , Ostrya carpinifolia
- American Hop-hornbeam , Ostrya virginiana
- Ostryopsis - hazel-hornbeams
