Cochrane was named after Senator Matthew Cochrane, a well known local rancher. The population in the 2004 Census was 12,418.
Cochrane has experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to the booming city of Calgary, and is known for its incredible windsports located just northeast of the town centre. Major industries are construction, retail, and agriculture ( ranching). It's notable that the town has no business tax.
