The town was founded by United Empire Loyalists in 1798. In the late 19th century and early 20th century wealthy Americans built enormous homes there, many of which still stand today.
Some of Cobourg's Past Famous or Prominent Citizens were Marie Dressler (silent film actress ), Paul Kane ( American Frontier Artist ), William Weller ( Transportation and Communications Pioneer ), James Crossen ( Railway Car Builder ) James Renwick Riddel ( Early Canadian History Writer and Ontario Supreme Court Judge )
Food processing is the largest industry in Cobourg, which is home to operations of companies like Kraft, Coca Cola, and Weetabix.
Every July, in celebration of Canada Day, Cobourg hosts the famed Waterfront Festival. The Cobourg Waterfront was launched in 1987 as a part of the Town of Cobourg's Sesqui-Centennial Celebrations. The Festival was conceived by the Art Gallery of Northumberland's Director/Curator Peter Tulumello and Victoria Hall's Concert Hall Manager Mark Finnan.
Victoria Hall, a beautiful old building in the heart of Cobourg is home to the Art Gallery of Northumberland, as well as the Concert Hall and Municipal Offices. It was designed by architect Kivas Tully.
