The Clemson class was a redesign of the Wickes class. 156 ships were produced, some with alarming speed. Many were decommissioned in 1930. Nineteen were transferred to Britain in 1940 as part of the Destroyers for Bases Agreement. Others were converted or upgraded and served through World War II.
