Clara Barton ( December 25, 1821April 12, 1912) pioneer nurse and Red Cross advocate, was born to Stephen and Sarah Barton in Oxford, Massachusetts. She became a teacher at age 15, a post that she was to hold for the next 18 years. However, in 1854 she suffered from a mild nervous breakdown probably brought on by overwork. Afterward, she was appointed to a job as a clerk in the Patent Office in Washington, D.C.

When the American Civil War began, Barton resigned her position to devote herself to the care of wounded soldiers on the field of battle. In 1864 she was appointed by General Benjamin Butler "lady in charge" of the hospitals at the front of the Army of the James . In 1865 she was sent to Andersonville, GeorgiaAndersonville is a city located in Sumter County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 331 (174 in 1910). It is in the southwest part of the state, about 60 miles southwest of Macon, Georgia on the Central of Georgia railway., to identify and mark the graves of Union soldiers buried there. In the same year President Abraham LincolnAbraham Lincoln ( February 12, 1809 April 15, 1865) was the 16th ( 1861- 1865) President of the United States, and the first president from the Republican Party. The election of Lincoln, who staunchly opposed the expansion of slavery, polarized the nation placed her in charge of the search for the missing men of the Union army, and while engaged in this work she traced the fate of 30,000 men.
