Chocolat is a novel by Joanne Harris. It tells the story of a young widowed mother who arrives in a fictional oppressed French village and uses her chocolate to bring joy to people's lives. Chocolat is the French spelling, and is properly pronounced (approximately) "SHOW - ko - LAH".

The movie was shot in the village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain in Burgundy.

In 2000, the book was adapted to film by Robert Nelson Jacobs . It was directed by Lasse Hallström and starred Juliette Binoche, Alfred Molina, Carrie-Anne Moss, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Hugh O'Conor , Lena OlinLena Olin (born March 22, 1956) is a Swedish-born actress. She was born in Stockholm. Her father was also an actor and had appeared in several of Ingmar Bergman's films. After studying acting at the drama school of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm,, Peter StormarePeter Stormare (born August 27, 1953) is a Swedish-born film actor. A completely different movie titled Chocolat and directed by Claire DenisClaire Denis is a Paris-based filmmaker internationally known for her investigation of the human condition with its cross-cultural tensions and family troubles. Denis is a graduate of IDHEC, the French Film School, and served as assistant to Jacques Rivet was made in 1988.
