In 1998 the former Chatham city government merged with that of Kent County to form the city of Chatham-Kent. The 2003 population of the new city of Chatham-Kent was 111,925, while that within the old boundaries of the City of Chatham was 51,348.
Chatham is the birthplace of baseball hall of famer Fergie Jenkins and the singer/songwriter, Sylvia Tyson.
