The Centurion Card, more commonly known as the Black Card, is American Express' most prestigious charge card. Rumors of a special, black colored card circulated in the 80's, a card that would allow dignitaries and celebs unlimited spending power and after-hours access to stores. Though the rumors were false, American Express decided to perpetuate them by launching the Centurion Card in October 1999 to selected holders of Platinum card s with an annual fee of $1000 (now $2,500). The card is only available by invitation from the company, which usually requires spending $150,000 annually on another American Express Card. The card offers perks exclusive to Centurion members, such as buy one, get one free first class seats on transatlantic flights, personal shoppers at Escada and Saks Fifth Avenue, access to airport clubs, membership in Sony's Cierge personal shopping program, and a personal concierge and travel agent to handle any need a cardmember may have. The Black Card is a status symbol among the moguls and the glitteratti alike.
