Carroll County was formed on November 1, 1833 and was named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, who had died in 1832 and was the last survivor of those who had signed the United States Declaration of Independence.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,655 km˛ (639 mi˛). 1,632 km˛ (630 mi˛) of it is land and 22 km˛ (9 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.34% water.
