Bildt was born in Halmstad, Hallandia. He was elected leader of the Moderate Party in 1986, succeeding Ulf Adelsohn to the post. In 1991 the Social Democrats lost the election and a right-wing coalition government led by Carl Bildt came to power. Bildt was Prime Minister from 1991 to 1994, coincidentally an office that had been held by his great-great-grandfather Gillis Bildt , a century earlier.
