Capital Radio is a London-based British radio group. The company was originally set up to operate a music service to London on AM and FM. It went on air in October 1973 a few days after news station LBC, making them the first legal commercial radio stations in the UK. In the 1980s the station was allowed to operate separate services on AM and FM. Changes to media ownership laws meant that Capital was able to acquire other stations throughout the UK and is now a powerful player in the UK's commercial radio industry. Capital's London studios are currently based in Leicester Square.

Capital was inaugurated by chairman Sir Richard Attenborough, and the first song played was Bridge Over Troubled Water, by Simon and Garfunkel.

Capital Radio bought the financially troubled "alternative" radio station, XFM in July 1998.
