CSL had humble beginnings in Canada East in 1845, operating river boats on the St. Lawrence River in general commerce. Subsequent growth over the years was tied to expansion of the canal system on the upper St. Lawrence River (the precursor to the St. Lawrence Seaway), and to a new Welland Canal connecting to the upper Great Lakes. By 1924, CSL purchased its first self-unloader bulk carrier , the Collier, and also owned a shipyard in Collingwood, Ontario where CSL and competitor lakers were being built. CSL also came into ownership of one of Canada's largest shipyards, Davie Shipbuilding , in Lauzon, Quebec .
CSL's growth through the industrial booms of both world wars was largely tied to the increasing importance of the steel industry in Ontario, where mills were built, or soon to be built, in Sault Ste. Marie, HamiltonThis article refers to the City of Hamilton Ontario. For the Township of Hamilton in Northumberland County see Hamilton, Ontario (Township). Hamilton is an important Canadian steel-producing city in Ontario, located on the western end of Lake Ontario., and Nanticoke . CSL also tapped into the last of the remaining coalCoal is a fossil fuel extracted from the ground by mining. It is a readily combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock. It is composed primarily of carbon and hydrocarbons, along with assorted other elements, including sulfur. Often associated wi traffic from Pennsylvania across the Great Lakes to railways in Canada. Following railway dieselization, subsequent coal traffic would be moved by CSL to large fossil-fuel powered electricity plants .
CSL saw operations increase exponentially in the late 1950's with the opening of the expanded St. Lawrence Seaway and the timely discovery and exploitation of some of the world's largest iron oresteel production. Iron ores are minerals from which metallic iron can be extracted. The iron itself is usually found in the form of magnetite (FeO) or hematite (FeO), both of which are iron oxides. However, as much of the pure magnetite and hematite ore h deposits on the Labrador PeninsulaLabrador Peninsula is a peninsula in eastern Canada. It is surrounded by Hudson Bay to the West, the Hudson Strait to the North, the Atlantic Ocean to the East, and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence to the South-East. The peninsula includes the region of Labrado in Labrador City , Schefferville , and Mont Wright . Ore was moved to Sept-ÎlesSept-Iles (French for "Seven Islands") is a city in the Cote-Nord region of eastern Quebec, Canada. Geography Located on the north shore of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, between the Sainte-Marguerite and Moisie rivers, Sept-Iles lies on the shore of a deep- and Port Cartier by the Quebec, North Shore and Labrador Railway and Cartier Railway respectively, where it was then loaded into bulk carriers for transfer to Canadian and U.S. steel mills on the Great Lakes. CSL exploited this traffic by continually refining its self-unloading bulk carrier designs, coupled with improvements in stevedoring at various ports to arrive at a minimal number of human operators required.
