thumb .357 Magnum cartridges, containing bullets.

A bullet is usually a metal alloy projectile shot by a gun. As opposed to a shell, a bullet does not contain explosives. The term bullet refers specifically to the metal slug that is propelled from a firearm. Although the term is occasionally used to refer to the combination of bullet, case, gunpowder, and primer, such an item is properly called a cartridge.

1 Material

Bullets are classically molded from a mixture of lead and tin. Typesetter's lead (used to mold Linotype), works very well.

Some bullets are jacketed with copper or steel to make them harder.

Steel jacketed bullets are actually copper-dipped so that the steel will not damage the gun's rifling. BismuthBismuth is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Bi and atomic number 83. This heavy, brittle, white crystalline trivalent poor metal has a pink tinge and chemically resembles arsenic and antimony. Most diamagnetic of all metals, bi bullet alloys are available, and prevent release of toxic lead into the environment. Neither tinThe word tin is often used to mean a can, even if it does not contain any tin metal. Tin is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Sn ( L. Stannum and atomic number 50. This silvery, malleable poor metal that is not easily oxidized i nor copper are toxic to mammals. Rubber bulletRubber bullets are rubber-coated projectiles fired from guns. They are usually non-lethal, unless fired at short range, but heavy enough to pierce skin. Rubber and wooden bullets are often used in riot control and to disperse protests. The British use thes, plastic bulletThe plastic bullet is the name given to a type of non-lethal projectile fired from a specialised gun, used in riot control. The bullet was developed by the British as the plastic baton round (PBR). It was intended to replace the older rubber bullet with as, and beanbagThe flexible baton round is the trademarked name for a type of non-lethal kinetic projectile; it is more widely known as a beanbag round. It is typically fired from a shotgun, and is used by civil and military forces, mainly in the United States. The shots are designed to be non-lethal, for example for use in riotNewark, New Jersey Riots occur when crowds of people have gathered and are committing crimes or acts of violence. Dispersing violent crowds is usually a task for the police, although widespread rioting may require military support. Unstable countries typi control. Wax bulletsWax bullets are made of paraffin wax, and are pressed into a primed cartridge case. Gun powder is not used. A copper gas check is fitted onto the bottom of the wax bullet to reduce fouling and increase accuracy. Wax bullets are not normally lethal, and ar are often used by quick draw shooters for their own safety.
