The Buick Special is an automobile produced by Buick from the 1930s to the 1960s. The Special name appeared in 1936 on the entry-level full-size series, and saw continual use through 1958. It reappeared in 1961 and was retired in the later part of the decade.

1961

In 1961, the car returned after a short absence of 2 years, but this time it was on the brand new intermediate GM A platform. The Special was powered by an innovative aluminum-block 215 in³ V8. In mid-year a Skylark option was released with special trim, optional bucket seats and a 4bbl version of the 215. In 1962 the Special was the first car to introduce a V6 engine in the American market. This 198 in³ V6 was reverse-engineered from the 215 and used many of the same design parameters, but was cast in iron. The Skylark also became a separate series for 1962. Motor Trend voted the V6 Special their Car of the Year.
