A buddy icon is a small image associated with an instant messaging account, especially on AOL Instant Messenger. One's buddy icon is displayed in the messenging window of engaged parties.

A buddy icon facility is also available on MSN Messenger, but the icons are called Display Pictures.

Buddy icons have been used by entertainment companies, such as record labels or movie studios, as a form of word of mouth advertising. Buddy icons advertising the releases of films or albums are available through AOL software or company websites.
