Breathitt County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 16,100. Its county seat is Jackson, Kentucky 6.

1 Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,283 km˛ (495 mi˛). 1,283 km˛ (495 mi˛) of it is land and 0 km˛ (0 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.02% water.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 16,100 people, 6,170 households, and 4,541 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km˛ (32/mi˛). There are 6,812 housing units at an average density of 5/km˛ (14/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.69% White, 0.39% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.43% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,170 households out of which 34.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 14.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 23.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $19,155, and the median income for a family is $23,721. Males have a median income of $26,208 versus $20,613 for females.
