Brakel is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Brakel proper, Elst , Everbeek , Michelbeke , Nederbrakel , Opbrakel , Parike and Zegelsem . On January 1st, 2000 Brakel had a total population of 13,709 (6,633 males and 7,076 females). The total area is 57.04 kmē which gives a population density of 240.34 inhabitants per kmē.

Brakel chickens are named after the region.
