Braken county was organized in 1796 from parts of Mason and Campbell counties. It is named in honor of William Bracken, an early pioneer and surveyor in Kentucky.
The county is on the south bank of the Ohio River and is also bordered by Mason, Pendleton, Harrison and Robertson Counties.
