It is a wilderness area, designated as a unit of the National Wilderness Preservation System under the Wilderness Act of 1964 . The BWCA contains hundreds of beautiful lakes in near pristine condition. As of 1999, about 75% of the BWCA's water area was open only to non-motorized boat travel. The BWCA is comprised of over one million acres (4,000 km˛) and has over 1000 miles (1,600 km) of canoe waterways, although numerous portages are required on some routes.Within the BWCA are hundreds of prehistoric pictographs existing on rock ledges. It also has the highest peak in Minnesota, Eagle Mountain.
The BWCA shares its northern border with another canoe-only area, the Canadian Quetico Provincial Park .
