The title track, "Born in the U.S.A." is one of Springsteen's more well-known songs. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a patriotic song; it is a song of protest depicting the hardships Vietnam veterans faced upon their return from the war. The popular song "My Hometown" is a loosely autobiographical tale about a young man living in southern New Jersey, in an semi-urban wasteland riddled with racial tension, crumbling buildings and degenerate neighborhoods.
