Home > Boer goat

The boer goat was bred in South Africa in the early 1900s. They were bred from nubians and other market goats and were selected for meat rather than thier milk production. Boer goats have a high resitance to disease and adapt well to various climates and terrain.

Breeders' succeded and produced a goat that gains weight quicker then most other goats. Mature boer bucks (rams) weigh between 110-135 kg, and mature does (ewes) between 90-100 kg Boer goats can be raised effectively in combination with cattle due their preference browse and the resulting limited impact on the grass cover.

Boer goats have found popularity outside South Africa and are being used for cross-breeding in the United States and Australia to improve other breeds of goat.
