The Black Hills is a small isolated mountain range rising from the Great Plains of North America in western South Dakota and extending into Wyoming. Set off from the main body of the Rocky Mountains, the region is somewhat of a geographic anomaly. The region is considered sacred by the Native Americans of the plains.
After the discovery of gold in the 1870s, the conflict over control of the region sparked the last major Indian Wars on the Great Plains.
Following the defeat of the Sioux and their allies in 1876, the United States "purchased" the region (no actual purchase was ever completed and this area is under dispute to this day. In 1980, the US Supreme Court Ruled that the Black Hills were illegally "taken" and that renumeration of initial offering price plus interest - over $100 million - be paid. The Lakota refused wanting their land back).

The geologyGeology (from Greek γ&eta ge "the earth") and λογος logos "word", "reason")) is the science and study of the Earth, its composition, structure, physical properties, history, and the processes that shape it. Geolog of the Black Hills is complex. A TertiaryThe Tertiary period is one of the major divisions of the geologic timescale, from the end of the Cretaceous period about 64 million years ago to the start of the Quaternary period about 1. 6 million years ago. The Tertiary includes five geologic epochs th mountain building episode is responsible for the uplift and current topographyTopography a geography term, refers to the "lay of the land", or the physiogeographic characteristics of land in terms of elevation, slope, and orientation. Terrain is a similar term, used more to describe the land itself than the study of it. Topographic of the Black Hills region. This uplift was marked by volcanic activity in the northern Black Hills. The southern Black Hills are characterized by PrecambrianThe Precambrian is the period of the geologic timescale from the appearance of Earth around 4500 million years ago to the evolution of abundant macroscopic hard-shelled fossils, which marked the beginning of the Cambrian, some 540 million years ago. Remar granite, pegmatite and metamorphic rocks that comprise the core of the entire Black Hills uplift. This core is rimmed by Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks.
