Home > Bishojo

Bishojo (美少女; literally, "beautiful young girl"), often spelled bishoujo, is the Japanese term used to refer to pretty girls. Since bi- generally refers to feminine beauty, the meaning is more poignant for bishojo, unlike the male term, bishonen, which tends to mean male with a more effeminate beauty.

Bishojo are used in almost all genres of anime and manga, ranging from shojo to mecha.

A 'bishojo series' is a series directed towards a male audience predominantly featuring female characters, usually around high school age. The main draw for them is typically the art and the attractive women in them, although the approach has a poor reputation for overall quality. Some bishoujo series are Harem anime, although some exclude men entirely. However, these do not neccesarily have yuri content.

A Bishoujo series should not be confused with a shoujo series (which are aimed at a female audience) although at times the plots can be very similar.
