Home > Birger of Sweden

Birger Magnusson ( 12801321) was elected king when he was a mere four years old. This was done by his father Magnus Barnlock in order to secure the succession. Since Birger was only ten years old when his father died, a regency was instituted under Torgils Knutsson .

When Birger came of age, there was a conflict with his ambitious brothers, Erik Magnusson and Valdemar Magnusson . Torgils, who had supported Birger against Erik and Valdemar, was executed in 1306 during a temporary reconciliation between Birger and his brothers. This year, Birger was however taken captive by his brothers. The civil war ended in the division of Sweden into three parts under Birger's sovereignty. Birger's rule was, however, limited to eastern Uplandia, Nericia, Sudermannia, Ostrogothia, Gotland and the county of Vyborg.

What aggravated the situation was that Erik wrested Bahusia and northern Hallandia from Norway and was about to create a separate kingdom centered around Göta älv. In 1317, Birger prevented this by capturing his brothers during a banquet, which lead to their death. Birger was, however, ousted by his brothers' suppporters in 1318, and Erik's son MagnusMagnus II Ericson Magnus VII of Norway ( 1316 1377), King of Sweden, Norway and Terra Scania, son of the duke Eric.
