He also won 54 International caps for Scotland and is a member of the Scotland football hall of fame.
Bremner was born in Glasgow. He was on the playing staff at Leeds United until 1976 when he was transferred to Hull City. There followed management jobs with Hull and later at Doncaster before he was installed as manager of Leeds in 1985 as replacement for Eddie Gray.
In 1986-87, Bremner guided Leeds into the newly launched Second Division promotion/First Division relegation playoffs but they lost to Charlton - the side who won the contest and preserved their First Division status. Leeds failed to maintain a challenge the following season and in September 1988 Bremner was sacked to make way for Howard Wilkinson.
Billy Bremner began his second spell as Doncaster Rovers manager in the summer of 1989 but he was unable to get them out of the Fourth Division and he was sacked after two years in charge.
On 6 December 1997, the football community was shocked to hear that Billy Bremner had died in Doncaster after suffering a heart attack at the age of 54 - just two days before what would have been his 55th birthday. A statue has been erected in his memory outside Leeds' Elland Road ground.
