Home > Bicorne

The Bicorne hat is an archaic form of headgear associated with the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is most associated with Napoléon Bonaparte. However, it was worn in the United States Navy as late as the 1930s.

1 Current usages

The Lord Chancellor of the United Kingdom wears a tricorne hat, but the other Lords Commissioners wear bicorne hats.

Members of the Académie française wear the habit vert (green habit) at the Académie's ceremonies. The habit includes a black jacket and bicorne hat, each embroidered in green. Furthermore, the members—with the exception of women and clergymen—receive a sword.

On great occasions, such as the military parade on the Champs-Élysées on Bastille Day, the students of the French École Polytechnique wear the 19th-century-style "grand uniform," with the famous bicorne hat.
