Bernard Francis Cardinal Law (born November 4, 1931 in Torreón, Mexico) became archbishop of the Catholic Church's Boston archdiocese in 1984. Law was made a Cardinal in the consistory of May 25, 1985. The Vatican announced on December 13, 20022002 is a common year starting on Tuesday (see link for calendar). 2002 was the first palindromic year since 1991 and the last until 2112. 2002 was also designated: International Year of Ecotourism and Mountains National Science Year in the United Kingdom that John Paul II had accepted Law's resignation as archbishop, though he retains his position as a Cardinal. Cardinal Law moved Father Paul Shanley from parish to parish despite repeated allegations that he was molesting children. This supposedly celibateA vow of clerical celibacy is the promise of a Christian priest or bishop to remain unmarried, or, in some churches, of a deacon or priest not to remarry if his wife dies. In conjunction with church rules prohibiting sex outside of marriage, this implies priestA priest or priestess is a holy man or woman who takes an officiating role in worship of any religion, with the distinguishing characteristic of offering sacrifices. On May 27, 2004 Cardinal Law was appointed by Pope John Paul II to be archpriest of Saint Mary Major Basilica, an honorary ceremonial post in Rome. Two days earlier the Boston archdiocese had announced the closing of 65 parishes due to declining collections related to Church sex scandals.
