The S-Bahn System is formed by a central, overground east-west line (die Stadtbahn), a central, mostly underground north-south line (die Nord-Süd Bahn), and a circular, overground line (die Ringbahn). Geographically the Ringbahn takes the form of a "dogs head" and is known within Berlin by that name (Hundekopf) . Outside the Ringbahn, suburban routes radiate out in all directions.

This will see the current S25 divided into two services:- S25 Hennigsdorf - Nord Süd Bahn- Nordbahnhof and S26 Potsdamer Platz - Nord Süd Bahn - Teltow Stadt
Route numbers S19 , S26 , S4 , S86 and S10 have been previously used, but are no longer in service.
