Home > Bellingshausen Island


Bellingshausen Island is one of the most southerly of the South Sandwich Islands, close to Thule Island and Cook Island .

The crater on Bellingshausen Island is around 500 feet in diameter and some 60m deep.

Bellingshausen is named after Russian Antarctic explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen ( 1778- 1852) who discovered the island.

Bellingshausen led an expedition which discovered and named several islands in the region. Discoveries included Peter I Island, Zavodovski Island and Alexander Island.
